NCDPI Resources for Parents

ACRE: North Carolina's Accountability and Curriculum Reform Effort - also known as ACRE - is the state's comprehensive initiative to redefine the Standard Course of Study for K-12 students, the student assessment program and the school accountability model. This site is a parent's window to ACRE.

READY for Parents: Parents are critical partners in student success. Their involvement in their student's education – at school and at home – shows their support of the teacher(s), principal and school. This page provides parents pertinent information regarding accountability, educator effectiveness, and other topics that are part of the state's READY initiative.

NC College and Career Promise: Parents can access this site to learn more about Career & College Promise, Gov. Bev Perdue's commitment to helping every qualified student gain access to an affordable college education. Through a partnership among the Department of Public Instruction, the N.C. Community College System, the University of North Carolina system and many independent colleges and universities, North Carolina is helping eligible high school students to begin earning college credit at a community college campus at no cost to them or their families.

Common Core State Standards and North Carolina Essential Standards

Surry Parent Awareness: Surry County shares their one-page handout for parents that provides an overview of the new standards and the impact the standards will have on instruction.

National PTA Common Core Support: This site is devoted to supporting parent understanding of the Common Core State Standards. Parents can also access K-12 Common Core Guides for students in Kindergarten through grade 12 in both English and Spanish.

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Parents & Students Page: "The Smarter Balanced Assessment System will give parents and students more accurate and actionable information about what students are learning. Because these assessments are computer adaptive, they will also provide better information about the needs and successes of individual students."

College and Career Ready

ACT Parent Information Page: This site provides parents with information college planning, testing FAQs, and tools and resources. Parents can view ACT dates and sign up for the ACT parent newsletter.
